Solar Eclipse Information for Families

Staunton City Schools is considering **K-5 Elementary and Middle School Art** curriculums and supporting resources for adoption which will be available for public review at the Staunton City Schools Central Office through **Monday, April 8, 2024**. Community members are welcome to come during office hours to look at the materials and leave written feedback.  If you have any questions, please contact us by phone at 540-332-3920.

Elementary and Middle School Art Adoptions

Staunton City Schools (SCS) will host two speakers to share their personal journeys as part of the school division’s new drug awareness and prevention program. Both speakers will engage with middle and high school students, sharing their experiences, insights and lessons.

City Council Member Alice Woods will share her story of triumph over substance use disorder during four grade-level assemblies at Staunton High School on March 8.

On April 3rd, middle and high school students will hear from Julie Hofmans, who will travel from Louisville, Kentucky, to share the story of her son, [Wyatt](https://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001r-Jl3azfuGxpV71OCel7LJAHg2jLijThEJxY423IxARHlrH9v08f0FzSJOAIwWa7J1lM7FGIh7YFhwanJykr-1\_pge6-H1F8Qx-HzSyJD0NatrqQycYc2DfCpyAFJElGG4cSb37XpAw1gxaXkxYgA_lCb-LWGf-rDuLXDu6cMZ\_\_fM_zlAPj4w==\&c=xfnyglUrTA7iIfoAcLM4T1D9LFy-\_1AmE0EKVJZAAVNFsODaqjX6dw==\&ch=LmZLgEf1quudy646BbppB\_1se2S0t4eBjjXF8BjQK8x89LXwzcPl5w==). He tragically lost his life in 2020 after unknowingly taking a counterfeit Xanax poisoned with fentanyl. He was 23 years old.

All students in Bessie Weller Elementary School began a book reading of “J.D. and the Great Barber Battle” during literacy week at the end of October to support the critical role shared reading plays in developing fluency and comprehension skills.

The Storm Marching Band recently placed 2nd and won Best Music in Class A at the JMU Parade of Champions. Last month, they performed in the Blast in the Draft competition at Stuarts Draft High School and won 1st place overall in Class A, 1st place in music and visual, 2nd place in general effect, and 3rd in percussion and color guard.

Staunton City Schools is pleased to report continued growth in the latest SOL data released by the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE). 

Pass rates for Reading, Math and Science increased across the division for the 2022-23 school year, continuing a positive trend from last year when Staunton’s schools made the most growth of any division in the state when comparing pre-and post-pandemic scores.

﻿Staunton City Schools sends its deepest condolences to the family of Coach Paul Hatcher on his passing. Coach Hatcher put Staunton on the map as the place for excellence in high school boys' basketball during his coaching career of 43 years. His influence and legacy are indelible, and his legendary accomplishments will forever be the touchstone for high school basketball. We are grateful for his countless contributions on and off the court to our high school, our students, and the entire Staunton community.
